Garmin has announced the new nuvi 500 and nuvi 550 models - the first waterproof, rugged nuvis that work not only in the car but on the trail or water, too!

The nuvi 5x0 models are both pre-loaded with City Navigator NT maps for the lower 48 United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, providing turn-by-turn voice directions and millions of points of interest. The nuvi 500 also contains a United States Topo map, while the nuvi 550 instead expands City Navigator to cover Canada and Alaska as well. Both models accept topographical maps as well as Garmin BlueChart g2 Vision cards and Vision Inland Lakes cards, making the nuvi 500 series the ultimate companion on any terrain!

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better than the Garmin Colorado, the Garmin Oregon series was announced. The Oregon is the first rugged handheld GPS receiver from Garmin with a TOUCH-SCREEN interface!

The Oregon is available in five flavors: the base model Oregon 200, which features touch-screen control and contains a worldwide basemap, a small amount of internal memory for loading map detail from a home computer, and a microSD slot for detailed maps on data cards. Upgrade to the Oregon 300 for an enhanced basemap, a larger amount of internal memory (plus the free SD slot as well), electronic compass and barometric altimeter, alarm and beeper, and wireless exchange feature so that you can beam your waypoints, tracks, routes and geocaches wirelessly to other Oregon and Colorado users.

At the highest end are a trifecta of pre-loaded mapping goodness: the Oregon 400t with built-in topographical maps for the United States; the Oregon 400c with built-in BlueChart g2 charts for the United States East Coast, West Coast, Gulf Coast and Great Lakes; and the Oregon 400i with built-in United States Inland Lakes maps. The Oregon 400t boasts a 3D contour view of the topo maps, as well.

Similar to the GO 920 and GO 720, the newest navigators will feature new IQ Routes and Advanced Lane Guidance technology, which you can read about by clicking here. According to the press release, both the GO 730 and 930 will feature voice recognition software, while the GO 930 will add maps of Europe to the deal.

Some exciting news from Garmin - available later in 2008 (Q3), look for the Garmin nuvifone! With a 3.5" touch screen, and similar in shape to an iPhone, thie nuvifone will be the ultimate gadget, with 3.5G internet connectivity, Bluetooth, wi-fi, GPS with turn-by-turn directions (duh!), an internet browser, multimedia capability, camera, email access, etc.  The next step is for Garmin to choose a carrier. No longer will one have to compromise between using their phone and using GPS - the Garmin nuviphone will do it all!  I wonder what the battery life will be on this baby...

Looks like Garmin's finally added the ability to display aerial photography, and possibly even more detailed maps, on a rugged handheld GPS receiver.  Also, notice the wheel on top - could this be the end of buttons?  Maybe even a touch-screen handheld? We'll be sure to post information as it comes out.  Expect to see new units sometime in the spring of 2008.  If you need something sooner, get a high-end GPSMAP 60CSx with a $50 mail-in rebate through December 31st!
