TomTom 1, 3, 920?

TomTom has announced a new TomTom GO 920, the big brother to the GO 720.  In addition to the Map Share technology for instant map updates, the GO 920 is compatible with RDS-TMC traffic; in fact, the TomTom GO 920T package will include this receiver. The other major feature is the addition of Voice Recognition: TomTom claims that the GO 920 will be the first portable GPS unit that will accept voice commands for address entry. This one-ups the Magellan Maestro 4050, which only accepts voice commands for menu functions.

TomTom has also announced a new ONE, the TomTom ONE 3rd Edition.  It has a map upgrade and is compatible with the Map Share application, as well as RDS-TMC traffic compatibility.

New Nuvi 750/760/770

Garmin has announced a new nuvi 700 line.  The nuvi 700 series are pretty much similar to the 600 series but slightly slimmer and with multiple-point routing (finally!). The nuvi 750 is the base model; the nuvi 760 has Bluetooth and comes with an integrated traffic receiver; and the nuvi 770 is similar to the 760 but adds pre-loaded maps of Europe as well as North America. The 700 series are also compatible with both regular GTM traffic services and the new MSN Direct service, via an accessory receiver.  Does this mean that Garmin's already giving up on MSN Direct, or are they trying to gauge interest? We'll find out soon enough. The multiple-point routing is something that should've been in the nuvi series from the output; Garmin finally listened to the customers on this one.

Garmin Brings It

Garmin has announced the new Edge 605 and Edge 705 training system/navigators for cyclers.  In addition to the fitness and training center features of the Edge 205 and Edge 305, the new Edges have larger, color screens and microSD slots for expandable mapping.  Now you can add street maps, topo maps, or even marine charts onto your Edge, making it an all-in-one solution for any bike rider. The Edge 605 is the basic model; the Edge 705 adds a heart rate monitor, barometric altimeter, and ANT + compatibility with third-party sensors. The Edge 705 comes in three flavors: standard with a heart rate monitor, bundle with heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor, and navigation bundle with heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor, and a City Navigator NT North America pre-programmed data card.

Fleet Management comes to Tiger GPS

Tiger GPS is bringing Garmin and Beacon Wireless together to feature the FleetMaster System for vehicle tracking, remote monitoring, and of course, GPS navigation. Link a compatible Garmin StreetPilot, nuvi, or zumo with Beacon Wireless FleetMaster for the complete solution! FleetMaster with a Garmin system lets you:

  • Contact drivers - send text messages to the GPS receiver or a cell phone
  • Give directions - calculated in the car or in the office
  • Maximize efficiency - save time, money, and fuel by optimizing drivers' routes; figure out who should go where and when, then put it into effect with the click of a button

Is Magellan back on track?

Magellan has announced the new Triton line of handheld GPS systems. While they've basically upgraded the existing eXplorist models at the low end, the exciting top-of-the-line Triton 2000 is an industry-first outdoors system with a touch-screen interface! The Triton 2000 also features a fully integrated microphone and speaker, MP3 player, LED flashlight, digital camera, barometer and 3-axis compass, all for just $500! Check them out at our official Magellan Triton New Product Guide (click here).

Magellan's also been upgrading their website; the negative is that most of the user features are down until August 15th.  Basically, Magellan customers have had to go over two weeks without being able to buy accessories on the site or download manuals, updates and unlock codes, which is ridiculous.  Maybe the re-launch will also mean improved customer service and production.  Time will tell.
