Naughty vs Nice?

With the Holiday season past, let's hand out the Naughty & Nice Awards:

Naughty:  Lowrance.  As predicted, the takeover by Simrad wrought havoc on their shipping schedules; in addition, new units that were promised by the end of the year were pushed back as far as April.  Were they really shocked that it would take them four months longer than expected to produce items?  Were they ever really expecting to have stuff out in December?  And if not, why lie to the retailers?

Nice:  Garmin iQue M3.  One of our hottest sellers; a base-level PDA with a built-in GPS antenna for around $250 is, as the Guinness Guys would say, "Brilliant!"  Customers love this easy-to-use entry into the GPS world, especially at that price.  Bigger screen and more functionality also make the iQue M3 a much better buy than other units in the price range, such as the StreetPilot i3.

New Lowrance - Even More confusing numbers!

Well, Lowrance has announced their new Marine lineup for 2007.  Most of the items look the same as the predecessors, but the plugs in the back are supposed to be revamped.  It should now be significantly easier to build a new Lowrance marine network with GPS, sonar, radar, etc.  We've posted a new Lowrance Winter 2006-7 Product Guide on the site, which you can find by clicking here.

It's great that they have new stuff coming out, but why do they refuse to number them in a sensical fashion?  An example (and the worst offender):

The Lowrance LMS Series feature a high-resolution 5" diagonal color screen GPS and sonar combo.  They come with external or internal GPS antenna and single or dual frequency transducer.  Here are the models:

Pretty confusing, right?  Why not just call the new ones the 532/534/537/539?  Why are the different transducer parts different units, anyway?  The LMS-527C and LMS-525C are available with transducer only, while the LMS-522C and LMS-520C are available with single frequency ducer or without.  They're nice units - just double-check which one you're ordering before checking out!
